Most likely, when you first connect online you'll be asked to update your system. Every few weeks, Sony releases a required system update. You can download this, which will take a few minutes. Have patience and follow the instructions on screen. System updates are a necessary evil. They take some time, but ultimately they improve the functionality of your PS3. If you're a parent here's what you need to do to restrict the type of content available on a PS3.
Scroll left on the XMB to "Settings". Then scroll down to "Security Settings". Create a password so your kids can't change the settings without your permission and then select the acceptable content level of Blu-ray, DVD, games and Internet browsing. Game add-ons, in case you were wondering, are supplemental content for games you already own, but are not playable on their own. These can be new missions, multiplayer maps, or even in-game items. The store is pretty self-explanatory and easy to navigate.
The store uses real cash as opposed to "points" and works a lot like Amazon. When you find something you like, add it to your cart, and then purchase everything at checkout. PlayStation Home is a free online community where you walk around a virtual city. So if you want to examine a player's actual trophy collection, you can do that by browsing to a different part of his profile.
If you want to get into a virtual urination contest with another player, you can directly compare the size of his trophy collection to yours -- you can do it by listing every game you've both played, or actually go in and compare individual trophy acquisitions. And that's pretty much the long and the short of it. Xbox developers shouldn't have a hard time taking their Achievement lists and translating them directly into Trophies.
Sony certainly has a more elegant and interesting manner of displaying accomplishments, versus Xbox 's plain-Jane lists.
