Oct 02, Herbert Aaron Stokes rated it it was amazing. Great and honest story This unflinchingly honest account was a pleasure to read. At times, concerning, at time confirming my own military experience, and overall just refreshing. I read a lot of military history, and this should be on everyone's list.

Nevertheless read this book. Jul 22, Elizabeth Laborde rated it it was amazing. This is another book I've read in preparation for writing my second novel, "Black Friday," a story about a vet who returns from Iraq rather unhinged after all he has experienced. In some respects, Rosman's book was one of the best for my research. He tells the story without the glorification which is more common in high ranking Marines and special ops members.

I loved getting the information about day to day life and the little details most books don't get into, such as Rosman's experience of being at the end of the line. He had rocks thrown at him while on street guard duty, a daily reminder that locals didn't want him there. He also shares the story of friends he lost and the errors that cost human lives. All of these pieces make the book a five-star experience, one I wouldn't trade.

On a writing level, I sometimes wished an editor could clean up the repetition and grammatical issues that detracted from the story. That being said, the title is "I Should Have Gone to College," so these writing issues are symptomatic of having spent four years in the army rather than in college. On that note, I really appreciated this author's desire to broaden himself, whether by learning Spanish in Japan or by living in Brazil. For Rosman and the other soldiers who sacrificed so much for us, I am grateful.

Second, I am thankful he helped me have better insight about the day to day life for soldiers in Iraq. Feb 27, Brooke rated it really liked it Shelves: library-ed , war , e-books.

Presentation: 3. My credit is good, I make my payments on time…but a few days ago, a jarring realization struck me. I have had a job since I was in fifth grade. In the year I was accepting any type of yard work around my neighborhood. What was I earning then as a 12 year old? At this point, I had no expenses to speak of: no rent, food, college tuition, etc. The only things I needed to pay for were my fuel to drive to school and my new clothes.

Eventually I was moved up to being a server. The wage stayed the same, but the tips increased. The diner was 24 hours, and on weekends I would work from 6 in the evening until 3 in the morning. I am now With an interest rate of 6. That is staggering, especially when we think about the fact that it is STILL getting more expensive to go to college. To add to this, I attended a state university and I worked while I was in college, almost full time.

I was living as economically as possible and still barely making my expenses. I also had multiple scholarships and some help from my parents. This is unbelievable! How has our society dropped the ball on our smart and ambitious youngsters to this caliber? What is education worth to us? My peers who sought higher education should not be wrought with financial hardship and question their futures because they wanted to better themselves.

Dropping a lot of money on a college education without knowing what you really want to do after you graduate can be an expensive mistake. In some cases, just taking a year off after high school provides perspective and life experience that can help you decide whether you want to go to college or do something else.

With what college costs these days, I wanted to get a degree in something that would be useful to me. Two-year degrees and other training programs can prepare you for a well-paying job as a welder, paralegal, air traffic controller, dental hygienist, or in other fields without attending a four-year school.

Forcing yourself to go to college when you suspect another option is a better fit — such as technical or career-focused training, enlisting in the military, or even starting your own business — may be a waste of time and money. College can wait. When most people think of college students, they imagine fresh-faced year-olds toting backpacks across a picturesque quad. Even more so than their younger counterparts, older students are likely to be attending school part-time while juggling work and family responsibilities.
