The machinery is demonstrated daily by members of our technical team, who can answer your questions and tell you more about working life in the mill. Find out about Samuel Greg, the founder of Quarry Bank, and his journey from being a young boy in Belfast to building his cotton business. See the mill through the eyes of its workforce. The sights and sounds of working in the mill are brought to life in an immersive audio visual experience.
Please be aware that the audio visual experience contains loud noises and some flashing lights. The ingenuity of engineers was essential to the early Industrial Revolution. In these galleries you can explore how the mill was powered and the brains behind the technology.
Have a go at interactive engineering challenges in the Brain Power gallery, and see the historic steam engines and waterwheel in action. Come and discover where Quarry Bank's child workers lived, ate and slept, or explore the gardens they tended after long shifts in the mill. There will be a limited number of daily tours, so please ask at Visitor Reception on arrival if you'd like to visit the Apprentice House.
Quarry Bank House is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the cotton mill. Inside, you can enter the world of Hannah Greg and her family. If you chose to just enter the Woods — as you come the National Trust reception desk just walk around to the right and follow the footpath down towards Styal village. Once at the end of the path you will see Styal village ahead of you. Upon entering the woods, the kids were off exploring — there are endless broken tree trunks to climb, paths that lead up and down the valley, bridges to run over — the scenery is quite spectacular!
It was also perfect for dogs who enjoy a run around — we had several little visitors sniffing us out! One of the best parts of our visit was paddling in the River Bollin! If you follow your nose down the valley towards the river you come to some sand banks.
The kids loved paddling and following the tunnels through the water. It might also be worth taking a change of clothes or waterproof suits as our kids got a little wet!! Enjoy your trip. For an alternative view of life in the Industrial Revolution, take a guided tour of the Apprentice House to step into the lives of the pauper children who worked 10 hours a day in the mill.
Or stroll to Styal village to see how many of the other workers lived. In the village hub, a permanent exhibition explores the living conditions of the workers compared to life in the centre of Manchester. A tour of a two-up-two-down worker's cottage offers an insight into more than years of history and invites you to compare your life to those of the workers. On the estate there are acres of woodland to explore. Follow the meandering path of the river Bollin as you look out for an array of wildlife and beautiful views.
For a unique souvenir, make sure you pick up a Quarry Bank glass cloth, which has been woven on heritage looms in the mill. Follow signs for airport and then B to Cheadle.
